Working across sculpture, photography, installation, video and performance, her work examines the connections and tensions between society and the natural world.
Maria Fernanda Cardoso: Spiders of Paradise presents new works from Cardoso's Spiders of Paradise photographic series (2018–ongoing), alongside her acclaimed video work On the Origins of Art I-II (2016). Cardoso's subject is the tiny Australian Maratus spider – measuring less than 5mm in size – and their unique, brightly-coloured abdomens, which form part of their elaborate mating rituals. Across a suite of large-scale photographs, the exquisite multi-coloured patterns of various species of Maratus are presented as individual portraits. Produced in collaboration with scientific imager Geoff Thompson and entomologist Andy Wang from the Queensland Museum, each image is comprised of over 1000 individual photos, which together reveal stunning nuances of colour and form in incredible detail.

Their coverage was broad and diverse.
The arts were seen as an important regular feature of magazines such as The Australian Women's Weekly, targeting the housewife at home, the armchair traveller who read Walkabout, or the bloke who picked up Australasian Post or Pix during smoko. With a focus on the coverage of Sidney Nolan, this exhibition explores how magazines brought art and culture into the lives of their readers, drawing out the eclectic strategies that were used to present contemporary art to a wide audience.
As an expatriate living in London, coverage in Australian magazines kept Nolan in front of a home audience, while international coverage cemented a global reputation and a sense of an Australian national identity.

Curated by Jonathan Nichols the exhibition explores a horizontal culture in painting, where fundamental ideas about its history and vitality – long the influence of European and American values – are being reshaped in East and Southeast Asia. A common understanding is that painters look for the 'face' of their work, that aspect of a painting that looks back at them. Each of the artists in the exhibition takes on this idea, leaning into the mood and psychic processes of their own painting, with its inner constraints and struggles.
The exhibition presents the work of five artists: Jon Chan (Singapore), Un Cheng (Hong Kong), Chris Huen Sin-Kan (Hong Kong/London), Noor Mahnun (Malaysia), Tang Dixin (China).
Exhibition presented with Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in association with ANU Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra.
Given the prolonged closure of the Drill Hall Gallery for roof works and hazard remediation, Painting Itself will be displayed at the ANU School of Art & Design.<>Drill Hall Gallery;-35.2830936<>149.122311<>691d1200eb0af3f81f235a84<>Cult Classics with Venus Mantrap<>A series of Friday night filmic feasts showcasing cinema with bite: edgy movies and fan favourites that unnerve, push buttons, ask questions, or simply look good on the big screen!
